WHITE DEER, UNION COUNTY — Five people were injured Monday in a seven-vehicle crash on Interstate 80 westbound. The collision happened around 4:30 p.m. in White Deer Township, Union County.
State police say a tractor-trailer driven by Gueye Gornarou of the Bronx approached traffic stopped for construction. Gornarou allegedly failed to see the backlog near mile marker 202.
The truck struck a pickup driven by Drew Miller of Lock Haven. It also hit a tractor-trailer driven by Justin Jackson of Malvern, Ohio.
Police say Gornarou swerved into the left lane and struck an SUV carrying a family from Delmont. The SUV entered the median and overturned several times.
The tractor-trailer jackknifed, and its trailer landed on the overturned SUV. The SUV carried 50-year-old Jayson George, 44-year-old Lynn George and 3 children.
Jayson George and boys ages 9 and 17 were flown to Geisinger Medical Center. Lynn George and a 14-year-old girl were taken there by ambulance.
The jackknifed trailer also struck vehicles driven by Melissa Neville of Hawthorne, New Jersey, and Timmie Oneil of Nineveh, New York. State police did not identify the 7th vehicle mentioned in their initial report.
Interstate 80 westbound was closed for several hours following the crash. Traffic was detoured at Exit 212, the Interstate 180 interchange.
Troopers say the crash remains under investigation.
