SUNBURY — Dense wildfire smoke prompted businesses and recreation programs across The Valley to close early or move indoors . The Pennsylvania DEP issued a statewide Code Red alert , warning that air pollution was unhealthy for everyone.
The Fence Drive-In said they closed at 2pm to protect employees, while the Glenpool Club Pool and Oppenheimer Playground in Sunbury also closed early. Danville Area Community Center officials kept summer campers indoors.
DEP has declared a statewide Code Purple Air Quality Alert for . That designation means conditions are “very unhealthy.” All residents are encouraged to move their activities indoors. Current conditions are available at AirNow.gov.
A group of first responders is urging all area residents to take precautions as smoke creates hazy skies, a smoky odor and unhealthy air quality. The Williamsport Bureau of Fire recommends staying indoors, limiting strenuous outdoor activity and keeping windows and doors tightly closed.
Residents using air conditioning should switch systems to recirculate so smoky outdoor air is not pulled inside. Officials also encourage people to check on children, older adults and anyone with asthma or heart conditions, while following local air-quality updates.
