SELINSGROVE — An area council has voted to reject a proposal to formally partner with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The Daily Item reports Selinsgrove Borough Council on Monday night by a vote of 5-2, said that they decided against joining ICE’s 287(g) program, which would allow Selinsgrove police to assist the federal agency in limited immigration enforcement. The Daily Item reports Council member Richard Mease said that “Each of us was elected to serve the people of Selinsgrove and we know what their concerns are.” At recent public meetings, numerous people spoke out against working with ICE. The newspaper reports on Monday, resident Tony Butto presented the council with a petition, signed by 412 Selinsgrove residents opposing the proposal to work with ICE.
