WASHINGTON — One of the few officials who had not openly opposed the proposed immigration detention centers in Berks and Schuylkill counties, confirms the plans are canceled.
US Congressman Dan Meuser issued a statement Friday, saying the Department of Homeland Security’s plans will not include the two proposed facilities. The sites had drawn strong opposition from Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, US Sen. John Fetterman and many county and local officials.
Gov. Shapiro had said the facilities would ‘never end up’ in Pennsylvania. Cong. Meuser says his office was working with county and local officials on “extensive due diligence,” and he says that work helped shape the federal decision.
