HARTLEY TOWNSHIP, Union County — In Union County, state police say a 74-year-old Millmont man lost $45,600 in a Bitcoin scam this month. The investigation began after the victim contacted police about money he had sent.
Police say the victim received a computer notice claiming his device had been infected with a virus. He then spoke with an unknown person who claimed his financial accounts had been compromised.
Investigators say the caller posed as a consumer protection agent and told the victim to withdraw money, convert it to Bitcoin and send it for safekeeping. Police say the investigation is ongoing.
