HARRISBURG — A Columbia County elementary student is only one locally being recognized statewide for helping raise awareness about Lyme disease prevention. In the annual Lyme Disease Student Art Competition for first and second graders, state officials say Malorie Spiece earned first place in Pennsylvania.
The state honored 18 student winners during a Capitol event involving the departments of Health, Conservation and Natural Resources, and Environmental Protection.
Officials say the contest teaches children how to avoid tick bites and recognize symptoms of Lyme disease. Health officials encourage families to use insect repellent, wear protective clothing, and check for ticks after spending time outdoors.
