HARRISBURG — State environmental officials say several central Pennsylvania streams are getting stronger clean-water protections.
DEP says 98 streams statewide, covering more than 530 miles, are being redesigned as High Quality Waters.
Locally, the list includes Lick Run in Columbia County, Moyers Mill Run and Schrader Gap Run in Snyder County.
Additional streams are Smoke Hole Run in Dauphin County, Bender Run and English Run in Lycoming County. Also, Fishing Creek and McElhattan Creek in Clinton County, Penns Creek and Boal Gap Run in Centre County, Perry Furnace Run in Perry County, Kishacoquillas Creek in Mifflin County, and Bear Creek in Schuylkill County.
The designation applies to waterways that meet especially strong water-quality standards and support healthy aquatic life. It also means future development or discharge permits affecting those streams will face stricter environmental safeguards to protect existing water quality.
