HARRISBURG — A state senator from around here is pushing a plan to expand mental health care access in rural communities. State senator Gene Yaw says his bill would allow specially trained psychologists to prescribe certain medications to patients across the state.
Yaw says the proposal targets long wait times and a shortage of psychiatrists, especially in rural areas where access is limited. The bill outlines strict education, training, and supervision requirements.
He says the bill also includes coordination with a patient’s primary care provider. Officials say similar programs in other states and federal systems have shown safe, effective results for more than two decades.
