HARRISBURG — In Harrisburg, Governor Josh Shapiro signed a bill requiring cursive handwriting instruction in all Pennsylvania public schools. PennLive.com is reporting that the bipartisan measure was House Bill 17.
Josh Shapiro signed the legislation . It was sponsored by Dane Watro, a Republican representing Luzerne and Schuylkill counties, with support from both parties.
Supporters said research shows cursive activates areas of the brain tied to executive function and memory. Watro also cited concerns about undeveloped signatures on mail-in ballots.
Former Education Secretary Khalid Mumin questioned whether cursive is vital. Lawmakers noted 24 other states now require cursive instruction in public schools.
