SUNBURY — Winter can feel heavy, and the holidays often deepen grief that people quietly carry. St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church will host a Blue Christmas service at 6pm on Saturday, December 20, offering candlelight, quiet reflection, and room for anyone who needs comfort or relief.
“It’s just a place where people can be and not have to pretend that they’re overwhelmed with happiness as the world calls it, when they may have something that is really hurting their hearts. It’s a place to release that to God and to lean into the hope that will come again,” said the rector, the Reverend Dina Ischler.
She says participation is always optional, “Nothing is expected of anyone who comes. People can choose to participate as they wish. They can choose to add the start on the memorial tree. They can choose to receive communion, or they can choose to just sit in the pew and soak up the beauty, soak up the peace…it’s a very welcoming service.”
The Blue Christmas service is Saturday 12/20 6pm at St. Matthew’s, 32 North Front Street in Sunbury. There is also a Blue Christmas service will be held one night later at Grove Presbyterian Church in Danville. That service begins at 7pm Sunday, at 376 Bloom Street. There is more information on each church’s Facebook page.
