HARRISBURG — Pennsylvania’s budget impasse is now dragging into a third month, and SpotlightPA reports the costly delay is drawing sharp criticism from across the state. Lawmakers still can’t agree on a $50 billion plan, and they say there is no urgency.
Senate Majority Leader Joe Pittman says he won’t budge because the GOP needs concessions on issues like Medicaid reform, permitting, and school choice. Governor Josh Shapiro and House Democrats say they are done compromising; they’ve already reduced transit funding and won’t accept what they call a bare-bones deal.
Meantime, schools, counties, agencies, and nonprofits are suffering, with many forced to take out costly loans or cut programs as state payments remain frozen. SpotlightPA reports the stalemate is becoming a ‘back door tax increase’ for the taxpayers, as interest costs add up for municipal and agency borrowing.
