HARRISBURG — One of the counties in our region is surging in the number of measles cases.
Mifflin County now has 43 measles cases, making it one of the region’s biggest concentrations. The state Department of Health says the reason is…low vaccination rates, the return to school classes and the highly contagious nature of the disease.
Pennsylvania has 497 measles cases statewide so far this year, including 100 new cases in the past seven days.
Montour County has its first confirmed case, while Snyder and Union counties also added new cases. Snyder County now has 22 cases, while Columbia County remains at one.
Statewide, 87 people have been hospitalized, and two measles-associated deaths have been reported. Cases have also been confirmed in Northumberland, Lycoming and Dauphin counties.
