SHAMOKIN DAM — Twenty people gathered at Orchard Hills Cemetery to remember Baby Mary, a newborn murdered 25 years ago. The News Item reports that Northumberland County Coroner James Kelley organized the ceremony at the grave where the infant was buried.
The body of Baby Mary was found at a Sunbury transfer station in . Her mother, Tracy Dupre, was convicted of killing the infant and is serving life in prison.
Pastor Mark Gittens says Baby Mary’s legacy helped inspire Pennsylvania’s Safe Haven Law, which allows parents to surrender unharmed newborns at designated locations without prosecution. State officials say 51 infants have been safely surrendered under the law since 2003.
