LEWISBURG — A demolition permit for the historic Slifer House is drawing strong opposition from preservation advocates in Union County. The Standard-Journal reports the 165-year-old Victorian mansion was built in 1861 for Eli Slifer, a Civil War-era Pennsylvania official who worked closely with President Abraham Lincoln.
The home was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975 and has served as an orphanage, elder care facility, and museum. A group called Save the Historic Slifer House is urging RiverWoods and its parent organizations to pause demolition. The group is actively fundraising and looking for other options.
