SHAMOKIN — Leaders in Shamokin marked a major step forward with a downtown revitalization groundbreaking. City officials say Phase 1 of the Independence Street Streetscape Project began with a ceremony at Ninth and Independence streets.
Mayor Michael McLaughlin says the project reflects ongoing collaboration and long-term investment in the city’s future. Officials say improvements will enhance pedestrian safety, accessibility, traffic flow, and the overall downtown experience.
Representative Joann Stehr says the effort shows shared commitment to moving the community forward. Organizers say construction is expected to begin in late April or early May. US Congressman Dan Meuser attended the event.
