MOUNT CARMEL — A fast-moving blaze tore through a row of homes in Mount Carmel early , sending firefighters into a prolonged defensive battle.
Skook News says crews arrived around 12:30am on South Poplar Street and found several homes already engulfed, with flames spreading quickly between attached structures. They report…two homes collapsed within minutes, forcing firefighters out of the buildings as conditions deteriorated.
They report flames continued burning well past 2:30am while additional tankers and rapid-intervention teams arrived from five counties. The fire was said to be under control by 4am.
Northumberland County 9-1-1 tells us two people were taken to the hospital, including one volunteer firefighter.
The blaze reached three alarms, drawing dozens of local companies from five counties for the fire fight, water shuttles, and standby coverage.
The Red Cross is now assisting displaced residents.
A fire marshal has been summoned as well.
