Governor Josh Shapiro and First Lady Lori Shapiro make a statement following today’s guilty plea for the individual charged in connection with the attempted assassination of Governor Shapiro and the arson attack at the Governor’s Residence in April.
HARRISBURG — The man who tried to kill Governor Josh Shapiro by setting fire to the governor’s residence has pleaded guilty to arson, terrorism, and attempted murder. Cody Balmer, of Penbrook, admitted to breaking into the residence in April and setting it ablaze while Shapiro and his family were inside.
Governor Shapiro and his wife held a news conference after the guilty pleas, “I want you to know we will forever be grateful to the firefighters who rushed towards danger and put out that fire just in time. We are also incredibly grateful to the troopers who rushed our family out to safety in those early morning hours.”
Authorities say Balmer used Molotov cocktails and a hammer during the early morning attack, which caused more than $6 million in damage. Shapiro called the plea a “just outcome,” saying his family is still healing from the trauma. Balmer was sentenced to 25 to 50 years in prison.
