WILLIAMSPORT — The Northumberland County parents once charged in the death of their infant daughter have filed a federal lawsuit. PennLive.com reports Krystal Lee Semerod and Benjamin Gray are suing the city of Shamokin, its police chief, and three officers for false arrest, malicious prosecution, and defamation.
The case stems from the 2019 death of 6-month-old Zoey Semerod, initially ruled suspicious based on doctors’ opinions of shaken baby syndrome. Charges against the parents were dropped in after an autopsy listed the cause and manner of death as undetermined.
The parents say they spent more than 100 days in jail, were denied the right to bury their daughter, and suffered community ridicule. PennLive.com reports the investigation into the infant’s death remains open.
