United Way Organizes Volunteer Work for ‘Day of Action’

The biggest Valley work party of the year is just around the corner. Greater Susquehanna Valley United Way is working to organize volunteers who will work at non-profit and human service organizations in Northumberland, Snyder and Union Counties for the annual Day of Action event scheduled for April 25, 2014.

United Way holds the volunteer recruitment event each year to give those interested in getting more involved in their communities a day when they can complete work projects at area nonprofits, according to Keri Albright, President & CEO of Greater Susquehanna Valley United Way. “Any individual or group who wants to volunteer can register to join us. We traditionally reach out to people who have participated in the past, but others who are interested are welcome to join the effort. If you’re in a civic club, youth group, business office or any other organization wishing to get more involved in the community, we’d love to sign you up.” Albright also said they are looking for any and all non-profit organizations in Snyder, Union and Northumberland Counties to let United Way know if they need help with a project. “We place volunteers just about anywhere. Your nonprofit does not have to be affiliated with United Way to participate in Day of Action,” Albright added.

Randy Shroyer, resident of Selinsgrove and 2014 Day of Action Committee Chair said, “In past years we’ve had employees from Swineford National Bank landscape KidsGrove, Inc., volunteers from HRG, Inc. and Bison Analytics paint and do housecleaning tasks, and we’ve had employees from UGI help prepare a community pool for its opening day. This is just the tip of it.” Thirty-two projects requiring 166 volunteers working a combined 810 hours were completed during last year’s event.

Day of Action volunteers will receive a “Live United” t-shirt as a gift. To volunteer for the 2014 Day of Action or request volunteer workers for a nonprofit organization, call Greater Susquehanna Valley United Way at (570) 988-0993.
