DANVILLE — Montour County commissioners are hosting a news conference Tuesday to discuss the evacuation and follow-up response involving Danville Suites. The building was condemned last week, forcing dozens of residents to leave.

Commissioners say government agencies, emergency management officials, nonprofits, and others will discuss the evacuation and continuing assistance. The response included help with shelter, food, care, and other needs.

The issue drew more attention after state police said several pets were later found inside the condemned building. Commissioners may also make additional announcements during the news conference.

The post Commissioners To Discuss Danville Suites Evacuation first appeared on Newsradio 1070 WKOK.

MIFFLINBURG — In our region, the Upper Susquehanna Synod of the Lutheran church is studying how to serve congregations amid declining membership and a shortage of pastors and lay leaders.

Around here, a few Lutheran congregations have closed, a few have merged, and some churches do not always have a pastor or lay leader available to preside and preach. That discussion was part of the synod’s 39th annual assembly over the weekend at Camp Mount Luther.

More than 160 voting members gathered. Vice President Noah Roux said the synod is exploring partnerships with other synods and new ways of doing ministry in the 21st century.

Bishop Craig Miller led the assembly, which also included adoption of a budget, constitutional changes, and elections to Synod Council. The Lewisburg-based synod includes 112 congregations in 10 counties.

The post Lutheran Synod Studies Future Amid Declining Membership first appeared on Newsradio 1070 WKOK.

SELINSGROVE — A student pilot and flight instructor safely made an emergency landing Saturday morning on Route 11/15 in Selinsgrove. WNEP is reporting… Central Susquehanna Regional 911 official Chad Aucker says the Lancaster County pair had been practicing takeoffs and landings at Penn Valley Airport.

Aucker says they developed engine trouble shortly after takeoff and landed on an empty stretch of the highway just after 9am. The plane pulled into an emergency vehicle median, and no injuries were reported. Selinsgrove police and state police responded, and the FAA cleared the aircraft to be towed back to the airport.

The post Small Plane Lands Safely On 11 & 15 Selinsgrove Bypass first appeared on Newsradio 1070 WKOK.

UNION TOWNSHIP, UNION COUNTY— State police say a Northumberland man was seriously injured in a motorcycle crash Friday morning in Union County. Troopers say 21-year-old Ethan Harvey was riding south on Route 11 (near County Line Road and the Barry King Bridge) around 8pm when he failed to make a curve.

Police say the motorcycle went onto its side, slid into an embankment, and came to rest on its left side facing east. Harvey was wearing a helmet and was taken by Dauntless Hook and Ladder Ambulance League to Geisinger Medical Center.
