Pedestrian accident in Lewisburg involves boy

 

LEWISBURG – Injuries were reported after a pedestrian accident in the borough of Lewisburg Friday afternoon.  The Standard-Journal reports that a 9-year-old boy was struck by a car along North Front Street around 12:30 p.m. Friday.  Reports from the scene say the unidentified boy suffered a leg injury after being struck by a mini-van.  Police in Lewisburg did not have any additional information on the accident in calls made to the department Sunday.

 

Coal Township man remains critical after crash that injured four

 

SHAMOKIN – A Coal Township man remains in critical condition after a Friday afternoon crash in Shamokin Township that injured four people.  State Police in Stonington say 68-year-old Marlin Lahr was taken by Life Flight to the hospital after sustaining moderate injuries in the two-vehicle crash.  State Police say it happened when 50-year-old Debra Popiel, of Shamokin, pulled out from a stop sign onto Route 61 from Irish Valley Road.  Reports say Popiel drove into the path of the vehicle driven by 41-year-old Robert Gruneberg of Elysburg, and the two vehicles collided.  A nursing supervisor at Geisinger Medical Center says Lahr is listed in critical condition, while another passenger, Ronald Popiel, is reported in good condition.  The driver, Debra Popiel was treated for injuries and released.  Gruneberg was taken to Shamokin Hospital where he was also treated and released.

 

Police say the investigation into the crash continues and Debra Popiel will face charges for a stop sign violation.  (Staff)

 

Gun found; matches weapons in homicide case

 

SUNBURY – Parts of a gun have been found in the former residence of 39-year-old Michael Harrell, the Sunbury man accused of double homicide in the city.  Serving a search warrant last week, Sunbury Police searched the Fairmount Avenue home where Harrell was arrested after the January shootings of Crystal Scholl-Gordon and David Moore.  Court documents say parts of the gun, including the barrel, belt and wooden stock were found in the attic floorboards on July 18th.  The parts matched the description of the murder weapon, which was a .30 caliber rifle.  Harrell claims he did not kill Moore and Scholl-Gordon.  Following a preliminary hearing Friday, his charges are bound for court. Watsontown Police investigate car thefts in the borough 

 

WATSONTOWN – Watsontown Police are investigating a string of car thefts and vandalism in the borough.  They report Friday; money was taken from a parking car near the Watsontown Foundry.  In addition a vehicle parked on Elm Street was vandalized overnight Thursday.  Police also say they took three juveniles males into custody Thursday night after they were found stealing from numerous parked cars.  The teens, ages 14 and 15-years-old were found hiding along Vincent Avenue.  One of the juveniles reportedly showed police nine vehicles that they broke into, which include ones along Elm Street, Matchin Street, Mulberry Avenue and in the Mansion House parking lot.  The males were released to their parents and charges are pending. 

 

Police say they continue to investigate whether these thefts are related to last week’s car thefts in the borough.  Anyone with information is asked to call Watsontown Police at 538-2773. (Sara Bartlett)

 

Volunteers keeping up with flower planting around Cameron Park in Sunbury

 

SUNBURY – You may have noticed planted flowers surrounding Cameron Park in Sunbury, from the railroad tracks to Front Street.  But, it’s not the City bringing in the Marigolds and Verbena.  Chuck Skipper is one of about eight Sunbury residents who are volunteering to plant the flowers. Skipper, who also is part owner of the Cameron Park Café, says this is the third year they’ve been planting flowers.  It’s in an effort to revitalize the city.  The funds come with the help of a local attorney and others in the community. 

 

Skipper says they hope other Sunbury residents will see the volunteers planting, watering and taking care of the flowers, and maybe, start to help out themselves. Skipper says years ago, when he learned about the revitalization efforts in Sunbury, he knew he wanted to do something to help out, and encourages everyone to do something small that may help Sunbury thrive. Police report a burglary and theft of chainsaw in Union County

 

HARTLEY TWP – State Police in Milton are looking for those involved in a theft in Union County, after a person or persons broke into a shed in Hartley Township and stole a chainsaw.  Police say the incident happened sometime between Wednesday morning and Friday night last week.  Reports say the suspect kicked in the door of a shed along Aikey Road and took a chainsaw that was inside.  Police estimate the total loss with damages to be about $250.  They ask anyone with information to contact them.  (Sara Lauver)

 

McClure man facing assault and harassment charges

 

MCCLURE – A McClure man has been charged after allegedly assaulting a female this (Friday) morning.  Around 8:20a.m., police were called to a home in West Beaver Township, Snyder County where they say 54-year-old Glen Tharp reportedly kicked and threatened the woman with a pair of scissors.  Tharp was arraigned before District Justice Willis Savidge, and faces charges of simple assault and harassment.  He is in Snyder County Prison on $20,000 bail, and police say additional charges in the incident are pending. MOON, Pa. (AP) - Robert Morris is suddenly a very popular name for universities. In 2002, the Pittsburgh-area Robert Morris became a university. It holds trademark registrations stating only it can use the name. Now, Robert Morris College in Chicago wants to be a university, and is suing for the name.

 

CLEARVILLE, Pa. (AP) - A Houston-based natural gas company is seeking court approval to build a storage facility in western Pennsylvania after failing to negotiate a deal with property owners. Meanwhile, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission is

reconsidering its approval of the project.

 

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh police are looking for a gunman who shot and killed a teenager in a daylight shooting. The identity of the man killed in the shooting yesterday has not been released.  Police say he is a teenager and died at the scene. The shooting

occurred just before noon.

 

STAR JUNCTION, Pa. (AP) - A 21-year-old man is dead after losing control of his motorcycle and crashing into a guard rail on Route 51 in western Pennsylvania. State police say Corey Allen Silbaugh of Perryopolis was wearing his helmet when he crashed at about 2:30 a.m. yesterday.

 

READING, Pa. (AP) - Some suppliers have stopped making shipments

to the Boscov's chain of department stores.  Boscov's chairman and chief executive Ken Lakin says this can happen when his company is "one minute late" with payments. But

he says the company is making things right and will be well stocked for back to school and the holidays.  Lakin says sales are weak, but he says that's to be expected in

a slow economy. He says the company based in Exeter Township near Reading isn't seeking bankruptcy protection.
